Avon Foundation – AACR International Scholar Awards in Breast Cancer Research

Purpose: To enhance the quality of cancer research in limited resource settings by supporting junior researchers to conduct research in the U.S.
Eligibility: Nationals or permanent residents of countries where opportunities for specialized scientific training are limited who are residing and conducting research within a low or middle income country. Applicants must be in their first faculty position and have been in faculty status for no longer than ten years by December 31, 2005. Applicants should possess a doctoral level degree and have the title Instructor, Assistant Professor, or equivalent.
Financial Provisions: US$50,000 yearly salary; one time award of US$25,000 institutional expenses, including travel, insurance, professional development, etc; and up to US$2,000 to support attendance at AACR annual meetings.
Duration: Two years.
Deadline: January 13, 2006. TBA for 2007.

AACR-Gertrude B. Elion Cancer Research Award

Purpose: To support basic, translational, or clinical cancer research by a tenure-track scientist.
Eligibility: Tenure-track scientists at the level of Assistant Professor who have completed postdoctoral studies or clinical fellowships no later than July 1 of the application year and not more than five years prior to the Award year. Employees or subcontractors of a national government or private industry are not eligible. Citizenship and residency unrestricted. Candidates must be nominated or co-nominated by an Active, Emeritus, or Honorary Member of the AACR.
Financial Provisions: US$50,000 for salary, benefits, laboratory supplies, and limited domestic travel. Attendance at the AACR Annual Meeting is mandatory.
Duration: One year.

AACR Career Development Awards

Purpose: To support basic, translational, or clinical cancer research and to support investigators moving from postdoctoral studies to faculty status. The five award programs focus on the following areas of research: translational or prevention lung cancer research, clinical cancer research focused on the HER family pathway, pancreatic cancer, translational pancreatic cancer research, and angiogenesis.
Eligibility: Applicants for the programs in angiogenesis, pancreatic cancer, and the HER family pathway must be affiliated with U.S. institutions. At the start of the grant term, candidates must be in the first, second, or third year of their first full-time appointment after completing postdoctoral studies. Eligible positions include Instructor, Acting Assistant Professor, Research Assistant Professor, Assistant Professor, or equivalent. Citizenship and residency unrestricted. Employees or subcontractors of a national government or private industry are not eligible. Candidates must be nominated or co-nominated by an Active, Emeritus, or Honorary Member of the AACR.

Duration: Up to four years.

Research Scholar Grants in Cancer Control: Health Services and Health Policy Research

Purpose: Support investigator-initiated research projects in health services and health policy outcomes research.
Financial Provisions: Up to US$200,000 per year (direct costs), plus 20% allowable indirect costs.
Duration: Up to four years.
Deadline: April 1 and October 15.

Mentored Research Scholar Grant in Applied and Clinical Research

Purpose: To support mentored research by full-time faculty, typically within the first four years of their appointment, with the goal of becoming independent investigators in clinical, cancer control and prevention, epidemiologic, psychosocial, behavioral, health services and health policy research.
Financial Provisions: Up to US$135,000 per year (direct costs) plus 8% allowable indirect costs. These grants are not renewable.
Duration: Up to five years.
Deadline: April 1 and October 15.

Cancer Control Career Development Awards for Primary Care Physicians

Purpose: To support primary care physicians with a rank of instructor to assistant professor who are pursuing an academic career with an emphasis on cancer control.
Financial Provisions: US$50,000, US$55,000, and US$60,000 per year. The grant also provides up to US$10,000 additional funds per year for support of mentor.
Duration: Up to three years.

International Professorship for Latin America

Purpose: To support to an ASM member to teach a hands-on, highly interactive short course on a single topic in the microbiological sciences at a Latin American institution of higher learning.
Eligibility: Joint application must be submitted by ASM member from North America and Latin American host institution.
Financial Provisions: Up to US$4,000 for travel costs, supplies and equipment, and local administrative costs. ASM funds should be matched by the host institution, but matching funds may be in-kind contributions.
Duration: One to two weeks.
Deadline: April 15, October 15.

ASM-PAHO Professorship for Latin America

Purpose: To support to an ASM member to teach a hands-on, highly interactive short course on a single topic in the field of antimicrobial resistance at an institution of higher learning in Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, or Peru.
Eligibility: Joint application must be submitted by ASM member from North America and Latin American host institution.
Financial Provisions: Up to US$4,000 for travel costs, supplies and equipment, and local administrative costs. ASM funds should be matched by the host institution, but matching funds may be in-kind contributions.
Duration: One to two weeks
Deadline: April 15, October 15.

ASM-IUSTF Indo-U.S. Professorship in Microbiology

Purpose: To enable microbiologists in India and the United States to visit institutions in the other country to teach short courses (Teaching Professorship), or to enable microbiologists in India to conduct a collaborative research project in the US (Research Professorship).
Eligibility: Indian and U.S. microbiologists. ASM membership not required.
Financial Provisions: Typically US$4,000 but up to US$8,000 for travel costs, supplies and equipment, and local administrative costs. ASM funds should be matched by the host institution, but matching funds may be in-kind contributions. ASM will provide one year of ASM membership to all participants.
Duration: Teaching professorship – one to two weeks; research professorship – six weeks to six months.
Deadline: April 15, October 15.

UNESCO-ASM Visiting Resource Person Program

Purpose: To enable members of ASM who plan to visit developing nations on academic or other business to arrange to spend a day with colleagues at a university or research institute in a major city. ASM will reimburse the member’s expenses for local travel and one or two nights in a hotel. Information on this program can be found on the ASM website.

Gorgas Memorial Institute Research Award

Purpose: To enhance and facilitate the development of scientific linkages between Panama, nations of Central America, tropical and sub-tropical South America and the Caribbean Islands, Mexico and the United States and Canada through support of short-term travel for young research investigators from these regions for the purposes of: (1) establishing collaborative biomedical research projects focusing on tropical diseases of health importance to people living in these areas, and (2) learning new techniques and approaches applicable to the study of such diseases.
Eligibility: Applicants should have Ph.D. or M.D. level training in a relevant field. They should be citizens or permanent residents of the Americas, and hold a position at a research, medical, public health or teaching institution in that country.
Financial Provisions: Awards will generally not exceed US$25,000 to cover the total costs of round-trip travel, housing and supplies required for a project.
Duration: Short term, not specified.

Grants for Biomedical Research: Canada and Selected Countries of Latin America

Purpose: To enhance and facilitate the development of scientific linkages among Central America, tropical and sub-tropical South America, the Caribbean Islands, Panama, and the United States.

Innovative Research Grant

Purpose: To broaden the base of inquiry in fundamental biomedical science, clinical research or behavioral research with relevance to rheumatic disease by encouraging applications for research proposals that involve an especially high degree of innovation and novelty or represent a special opportunity to address unique and relevant research questions.
Eligibility: Independent, self-directed investigators with any terminal degree are invited to apply. Citizenship unrestricted.
Financial Provisions: The award amount is up to US$100,000 per year

Arthritis Clinical Translational Award

Purpose: To foster the productivity of independent physician-scientists at the mid-career level who will strengthen translational research in academic health centers, both through their own studies as well as their mentoring of the next generation of physician-scientist trainees. It will provide support to explore fundamental scientific questions, to apply the resulting knowledge at the bedside, and to bring insights from the clinical setting back to the laboratory for further exploration.
Eligibility: M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. engaged in translational research in arthritis related questions at the assistant professor level with a minimum of three years of experience and track record of publication, independent grant support. Citizenship unrestricted.
Financial Provisions: The award amount is US$166,000 per year.

Purpose: To provide opportunities for outstanding researchers with proven international reputations to undertake research that is both of major importance in its field and of significant benefit to Australia. Australian Professorial Fellowships (APF) are available to researchers with more than eight years’ research experience since the award of the Ph.D. or equivalent research doctorate.
Eligibility: The awards are open to worldwide competition from researchers who normally have more than eight years of professional experience since the award of their Ph.D.

International Scientific Interchange Scheme

Purpose: To support short and long term travel from the UK as well as exchanges in the context of a long-term partnership.

Financial Provisions: Travel and subsistence costs only – no salaries, bench fees, or research costs.
Duration: Travel awards can be up to one year; partnering awards provide funding for a series of exchanges within two years.

International Workshops

Purpose: To support the organization of workshops between UK and international scientists to discuss potential collaborations. BBSRC is particularly interested in promoting further links with the U.S., Canada, EU member states, Japan, China, and India.

The Damon Runyon Scholar Award

Purpose: To support the development of outstanding biomedical scientists as independent investigators in the cancer field by ensuring the continuity of their research productivity at the critical transition from their research training to their first faculty position.
Eligibility: All applications must be submitted within the first three years of tenure-track faculty appointment. Non-U.S. citizens may apply only if they have a regular faculty appointment at a U.S. institution. Visiting appointments do not qualify.
Financial Provisions: US$100,000 per year.
Duration: Three years.
Deadline: Suspended until further notice.

Clinical Investigator Award

Purpose: To support young physician-scientists conducting patient-oriented cancer research.
Eligibility: The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident. The applicant must have received an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree(s) from an accredited institution and be board-eligible. Applicants may apply during final year of subspecialty training or within the first four years of initial assistant professorship appointment. Applications will only be accepted from institutions that have been invited to submit them by the Foundation. Only two nominations per institution, including affiliated schools, will be accepted.

Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award

Purpose: To support the research and mentoring activities of mid-career physician scientists.
Eligibility: Applicants must have an M.D., and M.D./Ph.D., or a foreign M.D. equivalent; must have a full time university appointment at the level of Associate Professor or above as of February 14, 2006; must have been appointed to their first full-time faculty position no earlier than February 14, 1991; and must have an established translational clinical research program in any disease area. Clinical Interfaces Award Program

Purpose: To support collaborations across disciplines, to demonstrate successful models for clinical research at the interface of multiple disciplines, and to support interdisciplinary and inter-institutional endeavors that go beyond the program project mindset.
Eligibility: Teams of investigators from at least three disciplines, all with advanced degrees. One must be a clinical researcher. Team leader must work in a U.S. nonprofit institution, though the team may include investigators at other institutions in the U.S. and overseas.

Operations Research on AIDS Care and Treatment in Africa

Purpose: To support health operations research in order to improve the care and treatment of AIDS patients in resource-limited settings, inform antiretroviral therapy policy and practice, and to improve outcomes of the roll-out and scale-up of antiretroviral therapy in Africa.
Eligibility: Investigators or teams of investigators working with healthcare teams that provide care and treatment to AIDS patients in Africa. Practical Courses, Workshops, Conferences and Conference Series

Purpose: To support high quality training and collaboration in the life sciences.
Eligibility: Any scientist in the field of molecular biology or related science in Europe. Funding is also available for the organization of courses and workshops outside of Europe as part of EMBO World Activities.
Financial Provisions: Depending on the meeting type, a maximum grant of €30,000 per meeting is available, paid in the calendar year in which the event takes place. EMBO will advance a percentage of the funds prior to the meeting and the remainder on receipt of the final accounts, reports, and questionnaires.
Deadlines: Twelve months in advance with the deadlines of February 1 and August 1.

EMBO Lectures

Purpose: To support lectures delivered by EMBO members at major international meetings thereby facilitating scientific exchange and bringing EMBO opportunities to the attention of a wide audience.
Eligibility: The lecture is a plenary lecture and is entitled "The EMBO Lecture."  The meeting should be a high profile meeting with an international perspective. Meetings on topics that can be justified as being under-represented in EMBO activities are also considered. Speaker must be a member of EMBO.
Financial Provisions: A maximum of €1,000 is available to support speakers at European meetings and for meetings outside of Europe a maximum of €3,000 will be provided. The expenses must be fully justified and should include the travel, subsistence and related direct expenses of the speaker. Normally support will be provided for one speaker only. Requests for repeat support for annual meetings will be considered.

FAIMER Institute and International Fellowships in Medical Education Program

Purpose: To promote excellence in international medical education by offering faculty from schools of medicine abroad educational opportunities in the United States. Selected fellows can then pursue advanced degrees at medical institutions worldwide.

Research Grants in Leprosy

Purpose: To provide support to basic scientists to allow them to contribute to the global goal of leprosy elimination, in particular, the application of the new available tools towards diagnosis and molecular epidemiology through the IDEAL consortium, but also: (1) investigation of mechanisms of nerve damage and reactions and the means to predict and to prevent leprosy; (2) development of more effective chemoprophylaxis, immunoprophylaxis, and more rapidly bactericidal drugs; and (3) development of methods for detection of the extent of drug resistance.
Eligibility: Citizenship unrestricted. Applicant laboratories should have experience in leprosy research and ongoing, productive interactions with laboratories in endemic regions and/or field sites/workers.

Georg Forster Research Fellowships

Purpose: To support researchers from developing countries to carry out academic projects in Germany.
Eligibility: Nationals of developing countries except Turkey, India, and China who have doctorates or comparable academic degrees and several years of experience as the leader of a working group. Applications must be submitted before the applicants turns 45 years old, except in exceptional cases such as parental leave. Applicants must have command of English or German.
Financial Provisions: Monthly stipends of €2,100 to 3,000, with the possibility of further sponsorship including round trip travel funding for non-Europeans and mobility allowances.
Duration: Six to twelve months, with extension to two years possible.

Humboldt Research Awards

Conference Grants

Purpose: To support the organization of scientific events of particular relevance to INTAS scientific policy, including support grants for individual participants from the NIS countries.
Eligibility: International scientific events in the NIS countries or periodic conferences alternating between INTAS and NIS countries are eligible for organizational grants. NIS scientists participating in international scientific events in or out of NIS countries are eligible for individual support. Scientists must be between 25 and 45 years of age and should be contributing to the conference in the form of a lecture, oral communication, or poster presentation.
Financial Provisions: Grants could range from a few hundred Euros for individual support to €20,000 for support to the organization in NIS countries.

Research Project Proposals

Purpose: To support research projects undertaken by international teams of scientists.
Eligibility: Consortia must include at least two teams from two different INTAS member states and at least one team from a NIS country. There are no thematic or geographical restrictions except the exclusion of market-oriented technology development.
Financial Provisions: Up to €150,000 total, depending on content, duration, and number of scientists. No more than 25% of funding is available to teams from INTAS member states.
Duration: 18, 24, or 30 months.

Purpose: To facilitate rapid international transfer of cancer research and clinical technology; to exchange knowledge and enhance skills in basic, clinical, behavioral, and epidemiological areas of cancer research, and in cancer control and prevention; and to acquire up-to-date clinical management, diagnostic, and therapeutic expertise.
Eligibility: Appropriately qualified investigators, pathologists, epidemiologists, cancer registrars, behavioral scientists, tobacco control activists, laboratory technicians, clinicians and general practitioners, generally in the early stages of their careers. Citizenship unrestricted.
Financial Provisions: Average award value for one month stipend and travel is US$3,000.
Duration: One month. Extendable by two months at no cost to UICC.

UICC International Cancer Technology Transfer Fellowships for Teaching Faculty (Reverse ICRETT)

Purpose: To facilitate up to one week long teaching and training courses by an outside faculty for groups of 10 - 30 appropriately-qualified professionals who work in cancer institutes, clinics, or hospitals in middle or low-income countries. Course subjects include basic, clinical, behavioral, and epidemiological areas of cancer research cancer control and prevention, clinical management, diagnostic and therapeutic skills
Eligibility: Appropriately qualified Head of Department (or similar position) of the organization applying for and hosting the training course.
Financial Provisions: Average award value US$2,000 –US$3,000 per faculty member.
Duration: Up to one week.

Invitation Fellowship Program, Short and Long Term

Purpose: To allow scientists employed at designated Japanese research institutions and laboratories to invite fellow researchers from other countries to Japan to participate in cooperative activities.
Eligibility: Citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan, or Japanese national working abroad for at least 10 years. Substantial research experience required, evidenced by status as senior scientist, university professor, or equivalent. For long term fellowships, researchers with a Ph.D. for at least six years are also eligible to apply. In addition to applying via a Japanese host institution, applicants may contact a foreign nominating authority, such as the Fogarty International Center for NIH – affiliated scientists.
Financial Provisions: Short term: Round-trip air ticket, per diem of ¥18,000, and a domestic travel allowance of ¥150,000. Long term: Round-trip air ticket, monthly stipend of ¥369,000, domestic travel allowance of ¥100,000, research expense of ¥40,000.
Duration: Short term: 14 to 60 days, long term: 61 days to 10 months.
Deadline: September 9 (both) and May 12 (short term only).

Field of Study: Type 1 diabetes and its complications.

Career Development Award

Purpose: To support research by qualified and promising scientists early in their faculty careers, giving them the opportunity to establish themselves in areas that reflect the JDRF research mission goals. Research may emphasize basic or clinical topics.
Eligibility: Applicants should have received their first doctoral degree at least three but not more than seven years before the award. The applicant must hold an academic faculty-level position (including assistant professor or equivalent) at the time of the application at a university, health science center, or comparable institution with strong, well-established research and training programs for the chosen area of interest. Citizenship and location unrestricted.
Financial Provisions: Awards are in the amount of US$150,000 per year, including indirect costs. These funds may be used for research allowance, which can include a technician, supplies, equipment, and travel up to US$2000 per year. Salary request must be consistent with the established salary structure of the applicant’s institution. Indirect costs (excluding equipment) cannot exceed 10%.
Duration: Up to five years. At least 75% of the time and effort of the awardee must be spent on diabetes related research projects.
Deadline: January 17 and July 14, 2006.

Early Career Patient-oriented Diabetes Research Award

Purpose: To support investigators in pursuing diabetes-related clinical research and in transitioning to independent faculty or research appointments.
Eligibility: The successful candidate will have an M.D. or M.D.-Ph.D.., hold an appointment or joint appointment in a subspecialty of clinical medicine, and conduct human clinical research. In exceptional circumstances, non-M.D. candidates will be considered if their work is likely to contribute significantly to a clinical outcome. The candidate must hold an appointment or joint appointment in a clinical department. Citizenship and location unrestricted.
Financial Provisions: Awards are in the amount of US$150,000 total costs per year (up to US$75,000 of this may be requested for research allowance, which can include a technician, supplies, equipment, and travel of up to US$2,000 per year). Salary request must be consistent with the established salary structure of the applicant’s institution, and equipment in years other than the first must be strongly justified. Indirect costs (excluding equipment) cannot exceed 10%.
Duration: Up to five years.
Deadline: January 17 and July 14, 2006.

Innovative Grants

Purpose: To support highly innovative basic and clinical research that is at the developmental stage by providing “seed” money for investigative work based on sound scientific hypotheses for which preliminary data are insufficient for a regular research grant but that are likely to result in important results for the treatment of diabetes and its complications. Areas of scientific need are highlighted in the RFA each year.
