International Scholarship Programme

Purpose: To support Master’s and sometime Ph.D. level courses for outstanding students from developing countries. Requests will also be considered for travel and study awards for Ph.D. students doing their research in developing countries on topics judged to be of interest to Aga Khan Development Network.
Eligibility: Applicants must be in one of the countries listed above in order to apply. Selection criteria include academic excellence, financial need, admission to a reputable institution of higher learning, and coherent career plans. Applicants are expected to have some years of work experience, and preference is given to students under 30 years of age. Students already active in their program of study may not apply.
Financial Provisions: The funding provided is 50% scholarship and 50% loan, which must be paid back in five years, starting six months after the period of funded study ends. Funding is provided for tuition fees and living expenses only.
Duration: Length of period of study.
Deadline: March 31. Applicants may obtain application forms as of January 1 each year from
offices in the countries of current residence.

Information on the 4th round should be announced on the Alliance website in February 2006. In addition to Strategic Research Grants, the 4th round will likely include a Research to Policy Grant Program and a Capacity Strengthening in Health Policy and Systems Research Grant Program.

Strategic Research Grants

Eligibility: Research institutions, government agencies, health service providers and civil society organizations with well-established collaborations with stakeholders within the health sector at the country level. Research teams should integrate professionals across disciplines such as health policy, public health, economics, sociology, political science, and anthropology.
Financial Provisions: Ranging from US$50,000 to US$150,000 for research efforts.
Duration: Up to two years.
Deadline: June 15, 2005. TBA for 2006.

Avon Foundation – AACR International Scholar Awards in Breast Cancer Research

Purpose: To enhance the quality of cancer research in limited resource settings by supporting junior researchers to conduct research in the U.S.
Eligibility: Nationals or permanent residents of countries where opportunities for specialized scientific training are limited who are residing and conducting research within a low or middle income country. Applicants must be in their first faculty position and have been in faculty status for no longer than ten years by December 31, 2005. Applicants should possess a doctoral level degree and have the title Instructor, Assistant Professor, or equivalent.
Financial Provisions: US$50,000 yearly salary; one time award of US$25,000 institutional expenses, including travel, insurance, professional development, etc; and up to US$2,000 to support attendance at AACR annual meetings.
Duration: Two years.
Deadline: January 13, 2006. TBA for 2007.

AACR – Barletta Foundation Fellows Grant for Translational Cancer Research

Purpose: To support translational cancer research.
Eligibility: Citizenship and location unrestricted. Applicants must have a doctoral degree or equivalent, and must be in the third, fourth, or fifth year of their fellowship status. Applicants may not hold full-time faculty appointments. Applicants must submit and have accepted an abstract for the AACR International Conference. Applicants must be sponsored by an Active, Emeritus, or Honorary Member of AACR. Contact AACR for assistance in identifying potential nominators in applicants’ home countries.
Financial Provisions: US$35,000 for direct research expenses.
Duration: One year, renewable for a second year.
Deadline: January 1, 2006. TBA for 2007.

Research Fellowships

Purpose: To foster basic, translational, and clinical research by scientists at the beginning of their careers in the cancer field. Individual fellowship programs vary from one to three years and US$30,000 to US$40,000. The specific fields offered are: basic research, biologics-based therapies, research in angiogenesis, the HER family pathway, clinical research, clinical/translational research, and translational lung cancer research.
Eligibility: Candidates must hold the title of Postdoctoral Fellow or Clinical Research Fellow at an academic facility, teaching hospital, or research institution through the start of the grant term and be in their 2 nd, 3 rd, or 4 th year of postdoctoral training at the start of the grant term. Citizenship and geography are unrestricted except that research on the HER pathway and on angiogenesis must be conducted at U.S. institutions. Applicants must be sponsored by an Active, Emeritus, or Honorary Member of AACR. Contact AACR for assistance in identifying potential nominators in applicants’ home countries.
Financial Provisions: US$30,000 - US$40,000 per year, as well as registration and travel support for attendance at the AACR Annual Meeting.
Duration: One to three years.

AACR-Gertrude B. Elion Cancer Research Award

Purpose: To support basic, translational, or clinical cancer research by a tenure-track scientist.
Eligibility: Tenure-track scientists at the level of Assistant Professor who have completed postdoctoral studies or clinical fellowships no later than July 1 of the application year and not more than five years prior to the Award year. Employees or subcontractors of a national government or private industry are not eligible. Citizenship and residency unrestricted. Candidates must be nominated or co-nominated by an Active, Emeritus, or Honorary Member of the AACR.
Financial Provisions: US$50,000 for salary, benefits, laboratory supplies, and limited domestic travel. Attendance at the AACR Annual Meeting is mandatory.
Duration: One year.

AACR Career Development Awards

Purpose: To support basic, translational, or clinical cancer research and to support investigators moving from postdoctoral studies to faculty status. The five award programs focus on the following areas of research: translational or prevention lung cancer research, clinical cancer research focused on the HER family pathway, pancreatic cancer, translational pancreatic cancer research, and angiogenesis.
Eligibility: Applicants for the programs in angiogenesis, pancreatic cancer, and the HER family pathway must be affiliated with U.S. institutions. At the start of the grant term, candidates must be in the first, second, or third year of their first full-time appointment after completing postdoctoral studies. Eligible positions include Instructor, Acting Assistant Professor, Research Assistant Professor, Assistant Professor, or equivalent. Citizenship and residency unrestricted. Employees or subcontractors of a national government or private industry are not eligible. Candidates must be nominated or co-nominated by an Active, Emeritus, or Honorary Member of the AACR.

American Fellowships

Purpose: To support women doctoral candidates completing dissertations or scholars seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave or for preparing research for publication. One-year postdoctoral research leave fellowships, dissertation fellowships, and summer/short-term research publication grants are offered.
Eligibility: U.S citizens or permanent residents.

Career Development Grants

Purpose: To support women who hold a bachelor's degree and are preparing to advance their careers, change careers, or re-enter the work force. Special consideration is given to AAUW members, women of color, and women pursuing their first advanced degree or credentials in nontraditional fields.
Grants provide support for course work beyond a bachelor's degree, including a master's degree, second bachelor's degree, or specialized training in technical or professional fields. Funds are available for distance learning. Course work must be taken at an accredited two- or four-year college or university, or at a technical school that is fully licensed or accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Funds are not available for doctoral-level work.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens or permanent residents who hold bachelor’s degrees earned before July 1, 2001.
Financial Provisions: US$2,000-$8,000
Deadline: December 15, 2005. TBA for 2006.

Community Action Grants

Purpose: To provide seed money to individual women, AAUW branches and AAUW state organizations, as well as local community-based nonprofit organizations for innovative programs or non-degree research projects that promote education and equity for women and girls.
Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S citizens or permanent residents.
Financial Provisions: One-year grants (US$2,000-$7,000 over one year)
Two-year grants (US$5,000-$10,000 over two years)
Deadline: January 15, 2006. TBA for 2007.

International Fellowships

Purpose: To provide money for full-time graduate or postgraduate study or research to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Supplemental grants support community-based projects in the fellow's home country.
Eligibility: Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Financial Provisions: Master's/Professional Fellowship, US$18,000. Doctorate Fellowship, US$20,000. Postdoctoral Fellowship, US$30,000.
Deadline: December 1, 2005. TBA for 2006.

Selected Professions Fellowships

Purpose: To provide money to women to support a full-time course of study (during the fellowship year) in designated degree programs where women's participation traditionally has been low.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Women who intend to pursue a full-time course of study at accredited institutions during the fellowship year in one of the designated degree programs where women's participation traditionally has been low.
Financial Provisions: Master's and first professional awards, US$5,000-$12,000. Engineering dissertation awards, US$20,000.

Audrey Meyer Mars International Fellowships in Clinical Oncology

Purpose: To provide one year of advanced training in clinical oncology at participating U.S. cancer centers to qualified physicians and dentists from other countries, particularly countries where advanced training is not readily available.
Eligibility: Individuals must be accepted by eligible institutions that may then apply for funding.
Financial Provisions: This program provides up to US$45,000 annual funding.
Deadline: December 1.

Research Scholar Grants in Basic, Preclinical, Clinical and Epidemiology Research

Purpose: To support investigator-initiated research projects in basic, preclinical, clinical, and epidemiologic research.
Financial Provisions: Up to US$200,000 per year (direct costs), plus 20% allowable indirect costs.
Duration: Up to four years.

Research Scholar Grants in Cancer Control: Psychosocial and Behavioral Research

Purpose: Support psychosocial, behavioral, and cancer control research, including epidemiologic approaches to psychosocial and behavioral research.
Financial Provisions: Up to US$200,000 per year (direct costs), plus 20% allowable indirect costs.
Duration: Up to four years.
Deadline:April 1 and October 15

Research Scholar Grants in Cancer Control: Health Services and Health Policy Research

Purpose: Support investigator-initiated research projects in health services and health policy outcomes research.
Financial Provisions: Up to US$200,000 per year (direct costs), plus 20% allowable indirect costs.
Duration: Up to four years.
Deadline: April 1 and October 15.

Institutional Research Grants

Purpose: To provide rapid, one-time funding for novel ideas or for targeting urgent problems with immediate human benefit.
Financial Provisions: Up to US$72,000 total cost.
Duration: One year.
Deadline: There is no deadline; however, a letter of intent is required to obtain applications and instructions. See website.

Postdoctoral Fellowships

Purpose: To support the training of researchers who have just received their doctorate to enable them to qualify for an independent career in cancer research (including basic, preclinical, clinical, psychosocial, behavioral, and epidemiologic research).
Financial Provisions: US$40,000, US$42,000, and US$44,000 per year, plus a US$4,000 per year institutional allowance.
Duration: One to three years.
Deadline: April 1 and October 15

Mentored Research Scholar Grant in Applied and Clinical Research

Purpose: To support mentored research by full-time faculty, typically within the first four years of their appointment, with the goal of becoming independent investigators in clinical, cancer control and prevention, epidemiologic, psychosocial, behavioral, health services and health policy research.
Financial Provisions: Up to US$135,000 per year (direct costs) plus 8% allowable indirect costs. These grants are not renewable.
Duration: Up to five years.
Deadline: April 1 and October 15.

Cancer Control Career Development Awards for Primary Care Physicians

Purpose: To support primary care physicians with a rank of instructor to assistant professor who are pursuing an academic career with an emphasis on cancer control.
Financial Provisions: US$50,000, US$55,000, and US$60,000 per year. The grant also provides up to US$10,000 additional funds per year for support of mentor.
Duration: Up to three years.
Deadline: October 15

Physician Training Awards in Preventive Medicine

Purpose: Awarded to institutions to support physician training in accredited preventive medicine residency programs that provide cancer prevention and control research and practice opportunities.
Financial Provisions: Total amount of US$300,000 based on an average of US$50,000 per resident training year.
Duration: Four years.
Deadline: April 1.

Doctoral Training Grants in Clinical Oncology Social Work

Purpose: This award is made to support the training of doctoral degree candidates to conduct research related to the psychosocial needs of persons with cancer and their families.
Financial Provisions: Annual funding of US$20,000 (trainee stipend of US$15,000 and US$5,000 for faculty administrative support).
Duration: Up to three years.
Deadline: October 15.

Masters Training Grants in Clinical Oncology Social Work

Purpose: Awarded to institutions to support the training of second year master's students to provide psychosocial services to persons with cancer and their families.
Financial Provisions: US$12,000 (trainee stipend of US$10,000 and US$2,000 for faculty administrative support).
Duration: One year.
Deadline: October 15.

Doctoral Degree Scholarships in Cancer Nursing

Purpose: Awarded to graduate students pursuing doctoral study in the following cancer nursing fields: research, education, administration, or clinical practice.
Financial Provisions: Stipend of US$15,000 per year.
Duration: Up to four years.
Deadline: December 1.

Masters Degree Scholarships in Cancer Nursing

Purpose: This award supports graduate students pursuing master's degrees in cancer nursing.
Financial Provisions: US$10,000 per year.

International Fellowship Exchange Program

Purpose: To bring mid-career internists to participate in observational, short-term fellowships under the mentorship of senior faculty/department heads in medical institutions in the United States and Canada; to permit program participants to attend the ACP Annual Session in order that they may benefit from the educational courses and programs of the meeting; and to enable program participants to bring updated knowledge and skills to their country’s medical institutions and improve the delivery of healthcare to their countrymen.
Eligibility: Internists or sub-specialists of internal medicine who are ACP members or fellows, or are willing to become members upon selection. Applicants must be fluent in spoken and written English.
Financial Provisions: Stipend up to US$7,000 (US$2,500 per month for two months and round trip airfare up to US$2,000). An additional US$3,000 to attend the ACP Annual Session.
Duration: Two to three months.
Deadline: August 15.

The Sofja Kovalevskaja Award

Purpose: The Sofja Kovalevskaja Award offers up to 1.65 million Euros (approximately $2.26 million USD) over five years to exceptional young researchers to pursue a team -based project in Germany.
Eligibility: Applicants must have completed a doctoral degree with distinction with in the past six years and have published in prestigious international journals or academic presses. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation particularly welcomes applications from qualified, female junior researchers.

Fields of Study: Healthcare, implementation of community-based healthcare strategies, international partnerships.

International Partnerships

Purpose: To support health institutions in the U.S. to develop partnerships with selected institutions in low income countries, particularly in Eurasia.
Eligibility: Public and private organizations, both for-profit and not-for-profit, based in the U.S. These may include teaching hospitals, medical schools with public health components, and other health professions schools such as nursing.

ASM-CCID Program in Infectious Disease and Public Health Microbiology

Purpose: To support the development of new approaches, methodologies and knowledge in infectious disease prevention and control by placing postdoctoral researchers at the National Center for Infectious Diseases (NCID) in Atlanta, GA. Fields of study include bacterial and mycotic diseases, viral and rickettsial infections, nosocomial infections, HIV/AIDS, vector-borne infectious diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, and parasitic diseases.

Burroughs Wellcome Fund Postdoctoral Fellowship in Tropical Infectious Diseases

Purpose: To stimulate or sustain interest in research in tropical infectious diseases, to encourage individuals who are planning on a career in infectious disease research relevant to tropical or developing areas of the world.
Eligibility: Applications will be considered from any individual with an academic appointment of fellow who proposes to perform research in tropical infectious diseases (this award is not meant for students, pre-doctoral candidates, or faculty). Preference will be given to North American clinician-scientists enrolled in (or accepted by) an American Board of Internal Medicine-approved infectious disease fellowship program or a pediatric infectious disease training program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in collaboration with the Residency Review Committee for Pediatrics in the U.S., and those accredited through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).

Arthritis Investigator Award

Eligibility: Applicants with an M.D., D.O., Ph.D., or equivalent who have a minimum of three years of research experience and a maximum of six years, but are not yet established as an independent investigator. Ph.D. Scholarships

Purpose: Grants are awarded to individuals to support two years of Ph.D. research. Preference is given to those just starting Ph.D. programs. European citizens may work in Europe or overseas; non-Europeans may work in Europe.
Eligibility: Unrestricted citizenship. Applicants must be under 28 years of age and have worked on their Ph.D. for a maximum of six months at the time of application.
Financial Provisions: Grant is expected to cover living expenses. Irrespective of the scholar's age the basic monthly grant amounts to €1,400. In Switzerland, in the USA and the United Kingdom €500 are added as a compensation for purchasing power. Depending on the cost of living, all other countries are grouped into one of these two categories. All scholars are paid an additional flat-rate sum of €100 per month to cover minor project-related costs (books, traveling expenses, etc.) and premiums for personal insurance. A spouse allowance may be added; child allowance is not paid. Tuition and/or bench fees are not taken over.

Travel Allowances

Purpose: To support the acquisition of experimental qualification necessary in basic research. Travel allowances are intended to enable the recipients to visit laboratories further afield in order to study clearly-defined techniques useful for their ongoing research and the work of their research group at home. These visits may also ensure that both graduates from abroad as well as their potential supervisors are provided with the scientific and personal prerequisites before beginning a Ph.D. thesis. In addition, the Foundation supports participation in research-orientated courses and summer or winter schools where a selected number of participants learn clearly-defined techniques in practicals as well as in lectures and discussions.
Eligibility: Unrestricted citizenship. European citizens may work in Europe or overseas; non-Europeans may work in Europe. Applicants must be under 30 years of age for Ph.D. and under 32 for postdoctoral students.

The Damon Runyon Scholar Award

Purpose: To support young physician-scientists conducting patient-oriented cancer research.

Applicants may apply during final year of subspecialty training or within the first four years of initial assistant professorship appointment. Predoctoral Emphasis Pathway in Tumor Immunology

Purpose: To introduce graduate students to basic research in the field of tumor immunology by supporting programs in cancer immunology among groups of faculty. Programs include dedicated lecture courses, student-led tutorials, and cancer immunology journal clubs for graduate students.
Eligibility: Major universities with a core group of faculty with interest, expertise, and ongoing research in cancer immunology. Though most past grants have been within the United States, there are no geographic or citizenship limitations on applications.
Financial Provisions: US$450,000 over four years to support four students the first year and six students annually thereafter.
Duration: Four years.
Deadline: March 1, 2006. During the 2006 cycle, only currently funded programs may apply for renewal. New programs may be able to apply in future funding cycles.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

Purpose: To support training of young researchers in cancer immunology or general immunology. At least two fellowships are specifically for cancer immunology.
Eligibility: Candidates must have a doctoral degree and a sponsor with a formal appointment at the host institution, as well as no more than five years of postdoctoral experience (not counting residencies of M.D. applicants). Citizenship and location unrestricted; host institutions must be not-for-profit.
Financial Provisions: Stipend of US$40,000 the first year, US$42,000 the second year and US$44,000 the third year. Institutions receive an allowance of US$1,500 per year.

Fields of Study: Geographic: United States as well as selected present or former Commonwealth countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Programmatic: education, international peace and security, international development, strengthening U.S. democracy.

Grant Program

Purpose: To support research and activities relating to the goals of the corporation. There is no formal procedure for submitting a proposal. It is advisable to submit a preliminary inquiry stating the purpose of the proposed grant, the requested amount, the duration of the proposed project, the plan of operation, and the principal project personnel.
Eligibility: Nonprofit organizations in the U.S. as well as NGOs and universities in former commonwealth countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
Financial Provisions: Grants of less than US$25,000 are made at the discretion of the president of the Corporation; grants of more than US$25,000 are subject to approval by the board of trustees at one of its four annual meetings.
Deadline: Open. Submit a letter of inquiry for projects matching Corporation’s guidelines.

Pew Latin American Fellowships

Note: Funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts.
Purpose: To provide young investigators with an opportunity to further their scientific knowledge, promote scientific exchange and collaboration between investigators in the U.S. and Latin America, and advance basic scientific research in Latin America.
Eligibility: Nationals of Mexico or any country in Central of South America. Applicants must have held a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degrees, or equivalent, for no more than five years as of July 1, 2006. Applicants who received their degree from schools in the U.S., Canada or Europe will not be accepted. Applicants may not have had previous postdoctoral training outside of Latin America nor may they already hold a postdoctoral position in the U.S.
Financial Provisions: US$50,000 stipend, followed by a US$35,000 award to enable the fellow to establish a laboratory in his or her home country.
