Note: Details below are based on the 3rd round of funding,
which has now passed, and are provided to suggest the general scope
of funding. Information on the 4th round should be announced on
the Alliance website in February 2006. In addition to Strategic
Research Grants, the 4th round will likely include a Research to
Policy Grant Program and a Capacity Strengthening in Health Policy
and Systems Research Grant Program.
Eligibility: Research institutions, government
agencies, health service providers and civil society organizations
with well-established collaborations with stakeholders within the
health sector at the country level. Research teams should integrate
professionals across disciplines such as health policy, public
health, economics, sociology, political science, and
anthropology.
Financial Provisions: Ranging from US$50,000 to
US$150,000 for research efforts.
Duration: Up to two years.

Purpose: To provide rapid, one-time funding for
novel ideas or for targeting urgent problems with immediate human
benefit.
Financial Provisions: Up to US$72,000 total
cost.
Duration: One year.
Deadline: There is no deadline; however, a letter
of intent is required to obtain applications and instructions. See

Purpose: Awarded to institutions to support
physician training in accredited preventive medicine residency
programs that provide cancer prevention and control research and
practice opportunities.
Financial Provisions: Total amount of US$300,000
based on an average of US$50,000 per resident training year.
Duration: Four years.
Deadline: April 1.
Purpose: This award is made to support the
training of doctoral degree candidates to conduct research related
to the psychosocial needs of persons with cancer and their
families.
Financial Provisions: Annual funding of US$20,000
(trainee stipend of US$15,000 and US$5,000 for faculty
administrative support).
Duration: Up to three years.
Deadline: October 15.
Purpose: Awarded to institutions to support the
training of second year master's students to provide psychosocial
services to persons with cancer and their families.
Financial Provisions: US$12,000 (trainee stipend
of US$10,000 and US$2,000 for faculty administrative
support).

Fields of Study: Healthcare, implementation of
community-based healthcare strategies, international
partnerships.
Purpose: To support health institutions in the
U.S. to develop partnerships with selected institutions in low
income countries, particularly in Eurasia.
Eligibility: Public and private organizations,
both for-profit and not-for-profit, based in the U.S. These may
include teaching hospitals, medical schools with public health
components, and other health professions schools such as
nursing.
Financial Provisions: AIHA supplies sub-grants
covering partnership exchange travel, limited procurement and
shipping of equipment and supplies, training, communication and
coordination costs, participation in workshops and conferences, and
other activities. Partnerships are expected to leverage support for
additional costs as well as to cover the in-kind cost of
consultation by U.S. health professionals with the foreign
partner.

Purpose: To provide support for diverse
scientific events and projects that foster the exchange of
knowledge among psychologists across the world. Funds may be used
for organizing expenses, travel grants for targeted populations,
and support for special events or activities related to a theme
that is currently deemed of importance.
Eligibility: Priority is given in descending order
to international or multicultural organizations that: have standing
collaborative relationships with APA, are holding socially
significant and relevant events, are in transitional and developing
countries, have U.S. members, host events attended by U.S.
citizens, host events attended by over 500 people, or host
one-occasion events that are greatly socially relevant.
Financial Provisions: Varies by assessment of need
and relevance. Total fund of US$3500 per year.

Fields of Study: Immunological approaches to
the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer; general
immunology.
Purpose: To introduce graduate students to
basic research in the field of tumor immunology by supporting
programs in cancer immunology among groups of faculty. Programs
include dedicated lecture courses, student-led tutorials, and
cancer immunology journal clubs for graduate students.
Eligibility: Major universities with a core group
of faculty with interest, expertise, and ongoing research in cancer
immunology. Though most past grants have been within the United
States, there are no geographic or citizenship limitations on
applications.
Financial Provisions: US$450,000 over four years
to support four students the first year and six students annually
thereafter.
Duration: Four years.
Deadline: March 1, 2006. During the 2006 cycle,
only currently funded programs may apply for renewal. New programs
may be able to apply in future funding cycles.

Purpose: To support research and activities
relating to the goals of the corporation. There is no formal
procedure for submitting a proposal. It is advisable to submit a
preliminary inquiry stating the purpose of the proposed grant, the
requested amount, the duration of the proposed project, the plan of
operation, and the principal project personnel.
Eligibility: Nonprofit organizations in the U.S.
as well as NGOs and universities in former commonwealth countries
in sub-Saharan Africa.
Financial Provisions: Grants of less than
US$25,000 are made at the discretion of the president of the
Corporation; grants of more than US$25,000 are subject to approval
by the board of trustees at one of its four annual meetings.

Fields of Study: Unrestricted
Purpose: To provide opportunities for
individuals in developing Commonwealth countries to spend a short
period of professional training in the United Kingdom. Priority
fields are: education, engineering, environment, governance, public
health and technology. Public health cannot be comprised of 100%
clinical activities.
Eligibility: Institutions rather than individuals
must submit applications. Institutions must be UK-based, and a wide
range of professional, charitable, public and private sector
organizations are encouraged to apply. Nominees must be mid-career
professionals from a Commonwealth country. See most updated list of
eligible countries on the website.
Financial Provisions: Round trip travel, living
allowance, £480 to the host organization, £200 toward
travel within the UK, £632 as an arrival allowance, and fees
for any conferences or short courses attended during the
Fellowship.

Purpose: To encourage multidisciplinary
research focused on the prevention or cure of leukemia, lymphoma or
myeloma.
Eligibility: A proposed center should be composed
of at least three scientific projects capable of interacting.
Applications may be submitted by individuals holding an M.D.,
Ph.D., or equivalent degree, working in domestic or foreign
non-profit organizations, such as universities, colleges, hospitals
or laboratories. Applications may be multi-institutional in nature.
Applicants need not be U.S. citizens, and there are no restrictions
on applicant age, race, gender or creed. In any given year, no more
than one application can be submitted from an institution,
including its affiliated entities.
Financial Provisions: The Center's maximal annual
total cost, direct and indirect, cannot exceed US$1.25 million. The
aggregate costs over five years cannot exceed US$6.25 million. The
direct costs, if justified by the aggregate budget may be up to
US$1.042 million per year. The indirect or institutional costs
cannot exceed 20% of the direct costs per year.
Duration: Five years, with further competitive
renewal possible.

behavior; studying complex systems; and brain cancer.
Purpose: To initiate interdisciplinary
discussions on problems or issues, to help launch interdisciplinary
research networks, or to fund communities of
researchers/practitioners dedicated to developing new methods,
tools, and applications of basic research to applied problems.
Eligibility: Strong preference will be given to
applications involving multi-institutional collaboration. There are
no geographic restrictions on these awards and the Foundation
encourages international applications. The lead applicant must be
sponsored by a non-profit institution as defined by U.S. Tax Code.
The grantee institution must agree to administer the award and to
waive all indirect and administrative costs.
Deadline: Letters of inquiry can be submitted at

At least three separate, independently funded investigators must

Purpose: To provide organizations in developing
countries the opportunity to organize particular training for its
staff members. Such training provides specific skills or know-how
rather than a degree or diploma.
Eligibility: Organizations must be in a developing
country (see website for list of 57 eligible nations), may not be a
large industrial or multinational firm, must work in a field
relevant to sustainable development, and must identify a training
subject relevant to identified needs. Trainees should have a clear
relationship to the organization, and should be in a position to
introduce their skills and knowledge into the organization.
Organizations must continue to pay the candidates’ salaries
and to hold jobs for them during the training course.
Financial Provisions: Budget can range from €
30,000 to € 225,000.
Duration: Between two weeks and four months,
spread over up to one year.
Deadline: Open.
Purpose: To support refresher courses for NFP
alumni.
Eligibility: Organizations in developing countries
applying for refresher courses must be NFP alumni, having completed
any NFP-funded training or education course at least two years
prior to the planned starting date of the refresher course; and
must not be a large industrial and/or multinational firm.
Participants in refresher courses must be NFP alumni, having
completed any NFP-funded training or education course at least two
years prior to the planned starting date of the refresher course;
must be employed in an area to which the course will make a
relevant contribution; must have a clear-cut, functional
relationship with a relevant organization and be in a position to
introduce the newly acquired skills and knowledge into that
organization; must be a national of one of the 57 developing
countries on the current list of eligible countries, or on the list
of eligible countries at the time the original training course took
place; must be nominated by their employer, who pledges to continue
payment of the participant’s salary and to hold a job open
while the employee is attending the refresher course; and must be
available for the entire period of the course and be physically and
mentally be able to take part in the entire course.
Financial Provisions: Up to €70,000 to cover
travel costs of teaching staff and participants as well as salaries
of staff and a portion of subsistence costs for both staff and
participants.
Duration: Two weeks.

Purpose: To further the CRDF mission by offering its grant management mechanisms and expertise to other organizations that seek to support joint R&D activities in Eurasia.
Eligibility: The CRDF offers GAP services for civilian scientific research, educational and charitable projects and activities of a pre-commercial nature in the countries of CRDF operations. Projects may be basic or applied research. Projects may involve prototype development or process engineering, but may not include commercial manufacturing, sales or marketing. Projects with the aim of the development or improvement of a technology for military application are not eligible. Non-research activities that are eligible for consideration include a range of educational and training activities, environmental conservation and remediation projects, infrastructure development projects (e.g. donation of computers or other equipment) and other related activities.
Financial Provisions: GAP offers project administration, equipment procurement, import assistance, travel, financial management and logistical support services. The CRDF has implemented innovative administrative and financial systems including an extensive and reliable network of banking relationships abroad, in-country offices, enabling agreements with foreign government authorities, detailed financial reporting mechanisms, and proven management procedures to manage the secure, efficient and accountable provision of project resources (funds and materials) to foreign recipients. In addition to the CRDF’s proven payment and financial management systems, GAP provides project consulting, as well as financial and administrative services to manage and monitor project resources on behalf of project sponsors.

Purpose: To help developing country centers
work with an expert towards ensuring the highest possible quality
of research projects related to sexual and reproductive health
conducted in the course of long-term institutional development.
Eligibility: Centers in developing countries that
are eligible for the LID grant (see below). RPM can be provided
before or at initiation of the LID grant or during LID grant
implementation.
Financial Provisions: RPM will cover travel and
per diem expenses at the WHO Temporary Adviser rate for the
selected expert or mentor to work with the center for up to a month
at a time. It could also cover the costs of an in-country proposal
development workshop facilitated by the expert.
Purpose: To support the development of a
network of centers of excellence in reproductive health research,
including the introduction of evidence-based guidelines and tools
developed to improve reproductive health and the introduction of
the application of research in developing and strengthening
reproductive health programs.
Eligibility: Centers with demonstrated expertise
in a relevant reproductive health area, relationships with local
professional societies, linkages with national reproductive health
program managers, and the potential for involvement with leading
national NGOs and collaborating agencies. Centers which have
previously been recipients of LID grants or collaborated in other
research and development projects are encouraged to apply.
Financial Provisions: Funds available would not
exceed US$30,000 per year.
Purpose: To strengthen collaboration in
reproductive health research with existing research centers in the
developing world.
Eligibility: WHO Collaborating Centers; existing
RHR centers, including Service Guidance Centers; developing country
emerging centers which are current or past recipients of research
capacity strengthening grants; or developing and least developed
country centers eligible for research capacity strengthening
grants.
Purpose: To provide support to research centers
to develop or strengthen national capacity to conduct reproductive
health research and to increase the development and availability of
human and material resources necessary for research.
Eligibility: Research units focused on
reproductive health that are part of a university, government
structure, or non-governmental organization, preferably in Least
Developed Countries.
Financial Provisions: Not more than US$100,000
per year.
Duration: Up to five years, renewable once.
Purpose: To support research linked to improved
prevention, management, and care programs for priority reproductive
health needs; to foster multidisciplinary and multi-site
collaboration; to enhance capacity in reproductive health by
supporting research-based training; and to promote sub-regional
networks of research centers.
Eligibility: Each Regional Advisory Panel (RAP)
will issue calls for applications and fund two or three research
centers annually.
Financial Provisions: Maximum of US$60,000 per
collaborating center.

Purpose: To support courses, workshops, and
seminars on reproductive health research at selected centers,
preferably involving participants and trainers from several
countries.
Eligibility: Centers that are or have the
potential to become viable training centers. National and local
support of the proposal is highly desirable.

Purpose: To assist centers in maintaining
existing research resources and capacity, such as supporting
laboratory upkeep, sustaining library and information technology
maintenance, or the purchase of small pieces of equipment.

participate in global research.

Purpose: To enhance the quality and capacity of cardiology centres in less advantaged countries or regions.
Eligibility: Emerging cardiology centers in less advantaged regions, preferably with an existing relationship with an established center. Fellows should be young cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons, and must agree to return to their country of origin.
Financial Provisions: Each fellowship/traineeship lasts for twelve months, for which a grant of CHF25,000 applies. Funding is provided by the World Heart Federation and is paid in four equal instalments to the candidate’s bank account in the host country. An economy return airfare is also reimbursed upon presentation of a ticket receipt.
Duration: One year.
Deadline: September 1.
