AACR – Barletta Foundation Fellows Grant for Translational Cancer Research

Purpose: To support translational cancer research.
Eligibility: Citizenship and location unrestricted. Applicants must have a doctoral degree or equivalent, and must be in the third, fourth, or fifth year of their fellowship status. Applicants may not hold full-time faculty appointments. Applicants must submit and have accepted an abstract for the AACR International Conference. Applicants must be sponsored by an Active, Emeritus, or Honorary Member of AACR. Contact AACR for assistance in identifying potential nominators in applicants’ home countries.
Financial Provisions: US$35,000 for direct research expenses.

Research Fellowships

Purpose: To foster basic, translational, and clinical research by scientists at the beginning of their careers in the cancer field. Individual fellowship programs vary from one to three years and US$30,000 to US$40,000. The specific fields offered are: basic research, biologics-based therapies, research in angiogenesis, the HER family pathway, clinical research, clinical/translational research, and translational lung cancer research.
Eligibility: Candidates must hold the title of Postdoctoral Fellow or Clinical Research Fellow at an academic facility, teaching hospital, or research institution through the start of the grant term and be in their 2 nd, 3 rd, or 4 th year of postdoctoral training at the start of the grant term. Citizenship and geography are unrestricted except that research on the HER pathway and on angiogenesis must be conducted at U.S. institutions. Applicants must be sponsored by an Active, Emeritus, or Honorary Member of AACR. Contact AACR for assistance in identifying potential nominators in applicants’ home countries.

Purpose: To support women doctoral candidates completing dissertations or scholars seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave or for preparing research for publication. Canary Fund-ACS Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Early Detection of Cancer

Purpose: To support research that will have a direct impact on the early detection of cancer or that will provide experimental foundation for the development of early detection methods.

Purpose: The Sofja Kovalevskaja Award offers up to 1.65 million Euros (approximately $2.26 million USD) over five years to exceptional young researchers to pursue a team -based project in Germany.
Eligibility: Applicants must have completed a doctoral degree with distinction with in the past six years and have published in prestigious international journals or academic presses. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation particularly welcomes applications from qualified, female junior researchers.

David Award for International Travel

Purpose: To support a young psychologist to participate in an international or regional congress, with preference for applicants who intend to make a presentation.
Eligibility: Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in human reproductive behavior and should be graduate students or have a Ph.D., PsyD, or EdD in psychology with not more than five years postgraduate experience. Citizenship unrestricted.
Financial Provisions: Amount of expenses, up to US$1500.
Duration: Length of conference.

International Travel Award

Purpose: To support a psychologist to attend an international psychology meeting.
Eligibility: Ph.D., PsyD, or EdD in psychology or graduate studies in psychology, preference if on conference program. Restricted to APA members.

ASM-PAHO Infectious Diseases Epidemiology and Surveillance Fellowship

Purpose: To support promising young scientists from underrepresented countries in Latin America working in the field of antimicrobial resistance, to travel to North America to work on a research project with an ASM host.
Eligibility: Early career scientists from Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, or Peru, who have obtained their Masters, Ph.D., or other equivalent academic degree, and who have at least five years of laboratory experience in the area of bacterial resistance to antimicrobials, to visit an ASM host scientist in the United States or Canada.
Financial Provisions: US$4,000.
Duration: Six weeks to six months.

ASM-NCID Program in Infectious Disease and Public Health Microbiology

Purpose: To support the development of new approaches, methodologies and knowledge in infectious disease prevention and control by placing postdoctoral researchers at the National Center for Infectious Diseases (NCID) in Atlanta, GA. Fields of study include bacterial and mycotic diseases, viral and rickettsial infections, nosocomial infections, HIV/AIDS, vector-borne infectious diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, and parasitic diseases.
Eligibility: Individuals who either earned their doctorate degree or completed a primary residency within three years of their proposed start date. Applicants may not have a faculty position or be enrolled in a graduate degree program during the fellowship. Citizenship unrestricted.
Financial Provisions: Stipend of up to US$38,225, health benefits up to US$3,000 per year, relocation benefits up to US$500, and US$2000 annually for professional development.
Duration: Two years.

International Fellowship for Latin America

Purpose: To support promising young investigators in Latin American and the Caribbean to travel to North America to work on a research project with an ASM host.
Eligibility: Young scientists from any Latin American or Caribbean country. Candidates must be a member of a national microbiology society or ASM, and must have or be studying for a Masters, Ph.D., or equivalent academic degree. Visits must be to host scientists in the U.S. or Canada.
Financial Provisions: US$4,000.
Duration: Six weeks to six months.

UNESCO-ASM Travel Fellowship

Purpose: To support promising young investigators throughout the world to travel to another country or a distant site to obtain expertise in a method, procedure or specific topic.
Eligibility: Young scientists from any developing countries that is a member of the United Nations and/or UNESCO. Must have obtained, or be in the process of obtaining, their Masters, Ph.D., or other equivalent academic degree, or have completed postdoctoral training within the previous five years in any of the microbiological sciences. Visits may be to host scientists in any country that is a member of the United Nations and/or UNESCO.
Financial Provisions: US$4,000.

Gorgas Memorial Institute Research Award

Purpose: To enhance and facilitate the development of scientific linkages between Panama, nations of Central America, tropical and sub-tropical South America and the Caribbean Islands, Mexico and the United States and Canada through support of short-term travel for young research investigators from these regions for the purposes of: (1) establishing collaborative biomedical research projects focusing on tropical diseases of health importance to people living in these areas, and (2) learning new techniques and approaches applicable to the study of such diseases.
Eligibility: Applicants should have Ph.D. or M.D. level training in a relevant field. They should be citizens or permanent residents of the Americas, and hold a position at a research, medical, public health or teaching institution in that country.
Financial Provisions: Awards will generally not exceed US$25,000 to cover the total costs of round-trip travel, housing and supplies required for a project.
Duration: Short term, not specified.

Pfizer Centennial Travel Award in Basic Science Tropical Disease Research

Purpose: The purpose of the award is to facilitate international collaboration in basic science aspects of tropical infectious diseases and to provide interested physicians or scientists the opportunity to obtain hands-on field experience in, in combination with laboratory studies of, parasitic, bacterial or viral infectious diseases in endemic developing countries.
Eligibility: Full-time postdoctoral fellows (Ph.D., M.D. degrees or the equivalent) with positions at North American institutions who study any tropical infectious disease in one or more of the following disciplines: immunology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, entomology, or related areas. Co-mentors must be identified both at a North American institution and overseas mentor. Applicants should be sponsored by an ASTMH member.
Financial Provisions: US$3,000 to help defray travel costs and living expenses abroad
Duration: Short term, unspecified.

Robert E. Shope International Fellowship

Purpose: To provide international training opportunities in arbovirology and emerging diseases.
Eligibility: Full-time postdoctoral fellows (M.D., D.V.M., Ph.D., or related doctoral degree) with positions at North American institutions who study tropical infectious disease.
Financial Provisions: US$10,000 to help defray travel costs, living expenses, and/or research abroad.
Deadline: May 15, 2006.

Burroughs Wellcome Fund Postdoctoral Fellowship in Tropical Infectious Diseases

Purpose: To stimulate or sustain interest in research in tropical infectious diseases, to encourage individuals who are planning on a career in infectious disease research relevant to tropical or developing areas of the world.
Eligibility: Applications will be considered from any individual with an academic appointment of fellow who proposes to perform research in tropical infectious diseases (this award is not meant for students, pre-doctoral candidates, or faculty). Preference will be given to North American clinician-scientists enrolled in (or accepted by) an American Board of Internal Medicine-approved infectious disease fellowship program or a pediatric infectious disease training program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in collaboration with the Residency Review Committee for Pediatrics in the U.S., and those accredited through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).
Financial Provisions: US$50,000 in total for a one-year fellowship, to cover stipend, fringe benefits, health insurance, supplies, communications, travel expenses, etc. A minimum of US$40,000 should be budgeted for stipend (including fringe benefits). These fellowships do not allow indirect costs.
Duration: Twelve months, with at least three in tropics.

Arthritis Investigator Award

Purpose: To provide support to physicians and scientists in research fields related to arthritis for the period between completion of postdoctoral fellowship training and establishment as an independent investigator. This support is available to sustain individuals committed to a career in arthritis related research until full independence as an investigator can be obtained.
Eligibility: Applicants with an M.D., D.O., Ph.D., or equivalent who have a minimum of three years of research experience and a maximum of six years, but are not yet established as an independent investigator. The award requires an 80% time commitment in arthritis-related research. Citizenship unrestricted.
Financial Provisions: The award amount is US$75,000 for the first two years and US$90,000 per year after a competitive renewal. Costs include salaries, consumable supplies, equipment, travel and other items necessary for the proposed research.
Duration: Two years, with competitive renewal.

Purpose: To provide opportunities for researchers at the postdoctoral level to undertake research of national and international significance, and to broaden their research experience. ARC Postdoctoral Fellowships are available to researchers with up to three years’ research experience since the award of the Ph.D. or equivalent research doctorate.

Eligibility: Applicants must have submitted their Ph.D. thesis before commencement of the fellowship. No more than three years should have elapsed since the award of their Ph.D., and submitting an application. An excellent academic record is required.

ARC Research Fellowships, Queen Elizabeth II Fellowship (ARF, QEII)

Purpose: To provide opportunities for established researchers to undertake research of national and international significance. QEIIs encourage research in Australia by postdoctoral graduates of exceptional promise and proven capacity for original work. Australian Research Fellowships (ARF) and Queen Elizabeth II Fellowships (QEII) are available to researchers with three to eight years of research experience since the award of the Ph.D. or equivalent research doctorate.

Travel Allowances

Purpose: To support the acquisition of experimental qualification necessary in basic research. Financial Provisions: Funding and labor are provided through volunteers. Total grant amount is determined by multiplying the per capita grant (average of US$850) by the number of volunteers participating on a project (30 to 60 total, with five to 12 volunteers each on four to five teams). Grants total between US$17,000 and US$51,000 for one full season and cover the cost of maintaining volunteers and research staff in the field as well as project expenses. Grants cannot be used for salaries, equipment, or overhead costs.

EMBO Young Investigator Programme

Purpose: To support, promote and network Europe’s best young independent scientists.
Eligibility: Open to individuals who are within the first four years of leading their own independent laboratories. Candidates should have published one last author publication from their independent labs and must be working in an EMBC member state. For female candidates with children the four year time limit is extended by one year per child.
Financial Provisions: €15,000 per year where applicable, application for additional funds available.

Practical Courses, Workshops, Conferences and Conference Series

Purpose: To support high quality training and collaboration in the life sciences.
Eligibility: Any scientist in the field of molecular biology or related science in Europe. Funding is also available for the organization of courses and workshops outside of Europe as part of EMBO World Activities.
Financial Provisions: Depending on the meeting type, a maximum grant of €30,000 per meeting is available, paid in the calendar year in which the event takes place. Young Investigator Award in Vaccine Development

Purpose: To support outstanding research in vaccine development in clinical or laboratory investigation.
Eligibility: Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to vaccinology as a career and must be conducting research or working in a recognized U.S. institution.
Financial Provisions: US$60,000 total.
Duration: Two years.
Deadline: February 15, 2006. TBA for 2007.

Young Scientist Fellowship

Purpose: To support researchers in the Newly Independent States (NIS) by supporting research at their home institution and travel to institutions within INTAS member states (see lists below). Ph.D. and postdoctoral fellowships are available.
Eligibility: Applicant must be 35 years of age or less at the time the grant is awarded; must be a citizen and permanent resident of one of the NIS countries; meet the qualification criteria required by the category of grant they are applying for. Applicants may receive only one fellowship from INTAS. For Ph.D. fellowships, applicants must be working towards a Ph.D. degree at an NIS institution for at least another two years after the fellowship begins. Applicants for postdoctoral fellowships must have a Ph.D. and a research position at an NIS institution.
Financial Provisions: Fellowship includes a grant for research at the home institution, the cost of living expenses while visiting other institutions, and the cost of travel between institutions.
Duration: Two years.
Deadline: September 8, 2005. TBA for 2006.

Conference Grants

Purpose: To support the organization of scientific events of particular relevance to INTAS scientific policy, including support grants for individual participants from the NIS countries.
Eligibility: International scientific events in the NIS countries or periodic conferences alternating between INTAS and NIS countries are eligible for organizational grants. NIS scientists participating in international scientific events in or out of NIS countries are eligible for individual support. Scientists must be between 25 and 45 years of age and should be contributing to the conference in the form of a lecture, oral communication, or poster presentation.
Financial Provisions: Grants could range from a few hundred Euros for individual support to €20,000 for support to the organization in NIS countries.

Fields of Study: Cancer and cancer-related research, including epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental chemical carcinogenesis, cancer etiology and prevention, infection and cancer, molecular cell biology, molecular genetics, molecular pathology and mechanisms of carcinogenesis.

Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research Training in Cancer

Purpose: To enable junior scientists actively engaged in medical or allied sciences research to receive training at the IARC in those aspects of cancer research related to the Agency’s own program.
Eligibility: Junior scientists from low- or medium-resource countries. Applicants must have finished their doctoral degree (M.D. or Ph.D.) within five years of the closing date for application or be in the final phase of completing it. They should be under the age of 40 at the application deadline and should have spent less than five years aboard, including doctoral studies. Candidates must be proficient in English.
Financial Provisions: Stipend of approximately EUR25,000. The cost of travel for the Fellow (and in certain circumstances for dependants) will be met, a dependant’s allowance paid, and health insurance provided.
Duration: One year, with possibility of renewal for an additional year.
Deadline: November 30, 2005. TBA for 2006.

John J. Clarkson Fellowship

Purpose: To support postdoctoral investigators in conducting research relevant to public dental health at a center of excellence outside of his or her home institution or country.
Eligibility: Candidates must hold a degree in dentistry or a masters or Ph.D. in a scientific discipline, must be a member of IADR, and must be actively engaged in research in public dental health.
Financial Provisions: Fellows receive funding for accommodation, subsistence, and travel, up to a total of US$15,000.
Duration: Six months.
Deadline: Fellowship runs every two years – next deadline is in 2007.

John C. Nicholls Fellowship

Purpose: To support postdoctoral training in neuroscience at a distinguished foreign laboratory.
Eligibility: Applicants must be younger than 30 at the time of application, must be IBRO members, must have the agreements of a potential sponsor, and must reside in one of the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Cuba, India, Iran, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Uruguay or Venezuela.
Financial Provisions: US$25,000.
Duration: One year.
Deadline: March 1, 2006.

Travel Grants

Purpose: To support neuroscientists to present their research findings at international neuroscience meetings.
Eligibility: Neuroscientists who are IBRO members (IBRO membership is free) and who have an abstract accepted at an international neuroscience meeting.
Financial Provisions: Up to US$1,500.
Duration: Length of conference.
