Purpose: To bring mid-career internists to
participate in observational, short-term fellowships under the
mentorship of senior faculty/department heads in medical
institutions in the United States and Canada; to permit program
participants to attend the ACP Annual Session in order that they
may benefit from the educational courses and programs of the
meeting; and to enable program participants to bring updated
knowledge and skills to their country’s medical institutions
and improve the delivery of healthcare to their countrymen.
Eligibility: Internists or sub-specialists of
internal medicine who are ACP members or fellows, or are willing to
become members upon selection. Applicants must be fluent in spoken
and written English.
Financial Provisions: Stipend up to US$7,000
(US$2,500 per month for two months and round trip airfare up to
US$2,000). An additional US$3,000 to attend the ACP Annual
Session.
Duration: Two to three months.

care to carry out innovative research projects in areas related to
arthritis and the rheumatic diseases.
Eligibility: Ph.D. or equivalent committed to
arthritis related research questions. Not for laboratory research.
M.D. holders are not eligible. Citizenship unrestricted.
Financial Provisions : The award amount is
US$50,000 per year for salary and research expenses.
Duration: Three years; third year is competitive
renewal.
Deadline: Typically March 1, June 1, September 1,

Purpose: To advance the research training of
arthritis health professionals in their investigative or clinical
teaching careers related to the rheumatic diseases. The research
project must be related to arthritis management and/or
comprehensive patient care in rheumatology practice, research or
education.
Eligibility: Citizenship unrestricted. Health
professionals undertaking dissertation research related to
arthritis management and/or comprehensive patient care in
rheumatology practice, research or education may apply. The award
is not intended for laboratory research.
Financial Provisions: The award is for US$30,000
per year for salary and/or research support.

Purpose: To support clinicians who wish to
undertake a period of full-time training in a cancer relevant
research field leading to a Ph.D. or, exceptionally, an M.D., from
a UK institution.
Eligibility: Post-registration clinicians up to
and including specialist registrar grade. Citizenship is
unrestricted, but applicants must have been resident and working in
the European Economic Area for three years immediately before
application and intend to pursue a career in the UK.
Financial Provisions: Salary, university fees, and
laboratory running expenses, with the possibility of an additional
year of salary funding to facilitate re-entry into clinical
training.
Duration: Three years for a Ph.D., two for
M.D..

Purpose: To provide medical graduates or
psychologists with the opportunity to conduct research in
psychosocial oncology leading to an M.D., a Ph.D., or a Doctorate
in Clinical Psychology.
Eligibility: Medical graduates at registrar or
senior registrar grade. It is also open to appropriately qualified
psychologists who meet the graduate basis for BPS registration and
who are working towards chartered status and have a relevant
background. Prior research experience is desirable.

Purpose: To support general practitioners who wish
to pursue an academic career in cancer research within the field of
primary care by funding research leading to an M.D. or Ph.D..
Eligibility: Medical graduates who have completed
vocational training for general practice. Previous research
experience or further qualifications, for example a Master's degree
or training in research methods, would be an advantage. Citizenship
is unrestricted, but applicants must have been resident and working
in the European Economic Area for three years immediately before
application and intend to pursue a career in the UK.

Purpose: To educate public health managers on
needed skills and competencies necessary to strengthen public
health management in the developing world.
Eligibility: Public health professionals from
developing countries who are able to conduct management training in
their own countries following the course. Applicants may come from
non-governmental organizations, academic institutions and
ministries of health.
Financial Provisions: SMDP doesn’t provide
funding for trainees. Tuition costs are approximately US$5,000 and
additional expenses such as lodging, food, and airfare are
estimated at US$4,000 to US$5,000. Applicants in need of financial
aid should look to donors active in their countries.

Fields of Study: Unrestricted
Purpose: To provide opportunities for
individuals in developing Commonwealth countries to spend a short
period of professional training in the United Kingdom. Priority
fields are: education, engineering, environment, governance, public
health and technology. Public health cannot be comprised of 100%
clinical activities.
Eligibility: Institutions rather than individuals
must submit applications. Institutions must be UK-based, and a wide
range of professional, charitable, public and private sector
organizations are encouraged to apply. Nominees must be mid-career
professionals from a Commonwealth country. See most updated list of

Financial Provisions: Round trip travel, living
allowance, £480 to the host organization, £200 toward
travel within the UK, £632 as an arrival allowance, and fees
for any conferences or short courses attended during the
Fellowship.

projects or clinical clerkships for senior health professions
students or young researchers.

Medicine, Nursing, or Public Health. Young professional researchers

preference is given to those with previous experience in any
country in Latin America. Tulane University, Harvard University,

affiliated with the Global Health Education Consortium will receive preference.

Purpose: To provide leadership training in
mental health system development and to create a global network of
mental health professionals through workshops at the University of
Melbourne.
Eligibility: Citizenship unrestricted –
developing country nationals strongly encouraged to apply.
Professionals from all disciplines related to mental health system
development are eligible, provided they hold a degree in a health
discipline from a recognized University, have at least two years
experience relevant to the field of mental health, and be presently
engaged in such work. Applicants must be proficient in
English.
Financial Provisions: Fee is $A 16,500, with
reduced rates for applicants from lower income countries. Travel is
not included. Applicants are encouraged to seek outside funding to
cover the fee.

month stipend and travel is US$3,000.

Purpose: To provide an opportunity for
qualified nurses to augment their professional knowledge and

registered nurses from developing or Eastern European countries who
are actively engaged in the management of cancer patients in their

Fields of Study: Mobilization, allocation, and
management of scarce resources to improve health; and creation of
sound strategies for disease control and health promotion.
Purpose: To investigate how resources are
allocated and used for health purposes and to develop methods for
making such policy choices more rational and equitable, especially
in developing countries.
Eligibility: Applicants should have completed
graduate degrees and demonstrated potential leadership capacity in
their home countries. They are expected to show strong promise and
appropriate preparation (including facility in English) to enable
them to benefit from a period at Harvard. Further, they are
expected to have made, or intend to make, a commitment to a career
in health for which participation in the Program will be of
significant value. Applicants may come from any relevant discipline
or profession (e.g., medicine, law, public health, economics,
management, and social sciences).
Financial Provisions: Applicants should identify
and obtain potential sources of funding for the fellowship. The
Takemi Program can assist in identifying appropriate sources and
has limited core funds available for support of several Fellows.
Program funds for stipends and travel grants will be adjusted to

health fields that are not available in the Fellow’s home
country and to promote international exchange of scientific
knowledge related to health. This fellowship is offered through
each WHO region, and must be arranged with the full support of the
host country’s national health organization. See contact

Eligibility: Citizens of any WHO member state
(with regional exceptions including Canada and the U.S.) who are
currently engaged in medical or health work in their national
health organization or at a research or educational institution.
Candidates must have completed their training and have at least two
years of professional experience as well as command of language of
training and a written statement of intention to return to country
of origin. Candidates over 50 are normally not accepted.
Applications are accepted only from national health organizations
on behalf of nominated individuals.
Financial Provisions: Cost of travel, a daily
living allowance, health insurance coverage if required by host
country, and tuition fees as applicable.

possibility of renewal.
