Fogarty provides training to build expertise in managing disease outbreaks

A workshop designed to strengthen analytical capacity to manage disease outbreaks in developing countries was recently presented by Fogarty scientists, in collaboration with Pakistan's Aga Khan University. The weeklong session held in Dubai convened 34 participants from Pakistan, India, Nepal and Fogarty with backgrounds in computational modeling, microbiology, molecular epidemiology and veterinary sciences.
Their research interests covered a wide range of respiratory, enteric and vector-borne infections and the workshop focused on demonstrating statistical and mathematical approaches to study disease outbreaks. Participants brought their own datasets and were taught how to address key questions in the transmission dynamics and evolution of pathogens based on analysis of epidemiologic data and pathogen genetic sequences.
Fogarty's
Division of International Epidemiology and Population Studies regularly holds workshops aimed at developing expertise in low- and middle-income countries so that infectious disease outbreaks can be better managed locally, reducing the risk of regional and global pandemic threats.
