Fogarty awards new HIV/AIDS mentoring grants

As part of its effort to strengthen HIV/AIDS research training in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), Fogarty recently awarded about $320,000 to fund mentoring activities. The Clayton-Dedonder Global Health Mentorship Fellows Program will provide about $30,000 each for 10 mentoring fellowships at existing Fogarty-funded training sites in Haiti, Kenya, Malawi, Peru, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. A supplement to the Fogarty Global Health Program for Fellows and Scholars, the new program is designed to improve the teaching and supervisory skills of entry- to mid-level faculty at universities and research institutions.

"Effective mentoring enhances the training of researchers, promoting career development and building human capacity," said Fogarty Director Dr. Roger I. Glass. "This new program will increase both the size and the diversity of the ranks of HIV/AIDS research mentors in developing countries."

Established global health experts who have managed Fogarty-funded projects will instruct the mentorship fellows. The fellows, alumni of the Fellows and Scholars program will, in turn, mentor junior trainees currently enrolled in the same program. While undergoing this training, the fellows will continue to work in their respective areas of expertise, which include infectious diseases, epidemiology, women's reproductive health, implementation research, qualitative behavioral research, informatics, hematology, immunology, oncology, biomedical engineering and psychiatry.

Funding for the program is provided by the NIH portion of funds from the World AIDS Foundation through the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH), and will be administered by the Fogarty Global Health Program for Fellows and Scholars. The fellowships are named in honor of Drs. Alastair Clayton and Raymond Dedonder, the main scientific staff for the World AIDS Foundation for most of its 15-year history.

About the World AIDS Foundation

The World AIDS Foundation, jointly administered by Fogarty and the Institut Pasteur, was established as a part of the agreements by the Presidents of the United States and France on disbursement of royalties from HIV test kits following discovery of the HIV virus, and development of the technologies to test for HIV. Twenty-five percent of these royalties were earmarked to combat HIV/AIDS in the developing world.
