Note: The R01 Applications must be relevant to the mission of one of the participating ICs other than FIC as listed in PAR-21-311. Applicants for the R01 should consult with the listed IC staff contact(s). Confirmation of interest from at least one NIH IC, other than FIC is strongly encouraged before applying. Send confirmation of IC interest in taking assignment of the submitted application to BrainFIC@mail.nih.gov.

Eligibility

Scientists at LMIC institutions may partner with scientists in the United States and/or at other low and middle-income country institutions. (Income categories are defined by The World Bank Country and Lending Groups.
Applicants are encouraged to consult with participating NIH Institutes or Offices (see list of partners below) while developing their applications.
The proposed research must be relevant to the interests stated in the funding opportunity announcement of one of the participating NIH Institutes, Centers or Offices listed in the FOAs. The R01 Applications must be relevant to the mission of one of the participating ICs other than FIC as listed in the FOA.
Applicants who need time and funding to develop research collaborations and capacity, and to conduct pilot studies, are encouraged to apply first to the R21.
Applicants to the R01 must build on established research, research collaborations and research capacity building activities at LMIC site(s).

Program Overview

The Global Brain and Nervous System Disorders Research across the Lifespan program supports collaborative research and capacity building projects relevant to LMICs on brain and nervous system disorders throughout life. Grant recipients develop innovative, collaborative research programs that contribute to the long-term goal of building sustainable research capacity in nervous system function and nervous system impairment.

Exploratory and developmental research grants through the R21 announcement help researchers develop collaborations, build research capacity and conduct pilot studies. Research grants through the R01 announcement support well-developed research collaborations and research capacity building for research networks within institutions, countries or regions.
