Fogarty's scientists conduct original research in epidemiology and mathematical modeling of diseases, genomic evolution of pathogens, implementation science, and population studies. They use NIH’s supercomputer to develop modeling techniques that enhance preparedness and the response to emerging health threats, directly benefitting the health and safety of Americans.

Fogarty adds value to NIH and the Department of Health and Human Services through 439 active research and research training awards. Nearly all of Fogarty’s overseas grants involve American researchers. Two-thirds are awarded to U.S. institutions.

Applicant news—research security training required in 2026
Research security training is currently optional for extramural researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health. This will soon change. Completion of this training will be required for all applications submitted on or after May 25, 2026.

Making the invisible visible to improve population health: Rehnuma Haque, MBBS, PhD, won a Fogarty fellowship to study blood lead levels among reproductive age female garment workers in Bangladesh. The textile industry, which employs four million people, is the country's largest GDP sector.

Doing what seems useful: In November, the UC Berkeley School of Public Health announced the launch of its Reingold Institute for Global Health to honor Arthur L. Reingold, MD, now retired from his position as professor of epidemiology. Previously he worked at the CDC.
