MISMS Regional Meetings and Technical Workshops

The Multinational Influenza Seasonal Mortality Study (MISMS) organizes hands-on training workshops at NIH and with global partners.

Workshop Objectives

Review the state of knowledge of influenza epidemiology and evolution

Disease burden
Transmission
Vaccine
Evolution
Seasonality

Analyze data through a hands-on workshop on advanced methods of quantitative analysis

Time-series analysis (R, EPIPOI, etc.)

Disease modeling
Reproductive numbers
Phylogenetic analysis (BEAST)

Establish new collaborations for binational and multinational studies

Target Audience

Virologists interested in learning phylogenetic analyses to study genetic surveillance data
Public health officials, epidemiologists, and biostatisticians interested in estimating the seasonality and burden of influenza-related disease
Veterinarians studying influenza in non-human hosts (birds, pigs, horses, dogs, bats, etc.)

Meeting Length

Workshops are typically three to five days, including one to two days of scientific research presentations and two to three days hands-on training workshop led by the MISMS scientific staff.

Data

While we strongly recommend that participants bring their own data, software and sample datasets created by the MISMS team are distributed freely to workshop participants prior to the meeting.
