Photo of two boys in Haydom, Tanzania

This image was selected as a winner of the 2010 Fogarty Grantee Photo Contest.

One young boy stares into camera, another boy stands right behind him in the shadows, many sticks in the background

Photo title: Two boys in Haydom, Tanzania

Photographer: Jean Gratz, University of Virginia

Description: The project focus is childhood malnutrition and enteric diseases. I took the photo at a home within our field site in Haydom Tanzania. The boys were very keen to have there photo taken but a bit shy too. I like the photo because the boys look both strong and vulnerable.
