Project Description

Malaria infection during pregnancy causes red blood cells containing the malaria parasite to attach to the placenta, the organ vital for development and growth of the baby during pregnancy. Placenta infection with malaria disrupts placental function and is linked to poor pregnancy outcomes like low birth weight, premature birth, and stillbirth. This project will seek to determine the biological effects through which placental malaria alters placental function and identify strategies for exploiting this knowledge for the development of placental malaria interventions as well as tools for placental malaria detection during pregnancy.
