Project Description
This study aims to study novel global DNA methylation aberrations, a hallmark of cancer, in cervical cancer in women with HIV infection in two African countries—Nigeria in West Africa and Tanzania in East Africa. Our results will not only provide new mechanistic insight into HIV-associated cervical cancer, our unique study population and study design will also allow us to test the feasibility and clinical utility of the identified biomarkers as a first-line screening tool for HIV-infected women in conjunction with pap smears. Our study will promote the development of economic and effective cervical cancer screening tools for early detection and treatment of cervical precancerous abnormalities among HIV- infected women in low- and middle-income countries.
