Project Description

As Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria is one of several nations facing the threats of high HIV burden, low combination antiretroviral treatment (ART) coverage, and slow decline in new HIV infections. While ART programs have turned HIV into a chronic condition, morbidity from HIV-associated NCDs is becoming more common as HIV-infected individuals live longer, encumbering an already undercapacitated health system and emphasizing the need to develop clinical research capacity to generate evidence to tackle the burden of HIV and NCDs in Nigeria.

In response to this need, the Vanderbilt-Nigeria Building Research Capacity in HIV/Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) (‘V-BRCH 2’) program continues to harness the longstanding and highly successful research partnership between Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital/Bayero University Kano in Nigeria and the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health to sustain a research training platform that will create a cohort of highly-skilled Nigerian investigators with the capacity to lead independent clinical research focused on the intersection of HIV and NCDs.
