Project Description
Although antiretroviral drugs have revolutionized the management of HIV, they still need to be taken for life. If new infections and deaths continue to occur the fast-track strategy to control the epidemic by 2030 may not be met. New tools are required to get the world on track to bring HIV infection under control in sub-Saharan Africa and globally, and the most impactful advance would be the development of an HIV cure using gene therapy which is in line with NIH priorities to develop next generation HIV therapies and to discover a cure for HIV/AIDS. A cure strategy that prevents reinfection would revolutionize HIV management and constitute a one-time intervention with high impact on quality and quantity of life with phenomenal clinical, economic, and social value.
