Project Description

Lower respiratory infections are the leading infectious cause of death for children younger than five years of age in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) like South Africa. Innovations in the identification of severe pediatric respiratory diseases complicated by low oxyhemoglobin saturation levels (hypoxemia) that are suitable for use in rural communities of LMICs are urgently needed to reduce mortality. An affordable mobile phone-based reflectance pulse oximeter with electronic health diagnostic and surveillance capabilities that is also contextually appropriate for LMICs offers an exciting potential for improving outcomes for severe pediatric lower respiratory infections.
