Project Description
Psychiatric disorders, including alcohol use disorder and other stress-related disorders (e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder, and others), are a set of chronic, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) that constitute a global public health problem of enormous economic, social, and medical cost internationally. Low- and middle-income and developing countries such as Thailand are disproportionately affected due to both unique stressors and less well-established institutional infrastructures (facilities, personnel, and research) dedicated to the understanding, treatment, and prevention of psychiatric disorders; especially so during the COVID-19 pandemic when many countries, including Thailand, experienced extensive shutdowns and an interruption of the tourist industry, a major source of income.
This aims to be a collaborative research training program in the interdisciplinary and translational research of stress, alcohol use, and psychopathology between three Thai institutes—the Chulalongkorn University Faculty of Medicine (a leading medical research center in Thailand and established collaborator), the lead Thai site, Phramongkutklao Hospital and Medical College in Bangkok, Thailand (a new collaborator), and Prince of Songkla University in Hat Yai, Thailand (also a new collaborator)—and the Yale University School of Medicine in the U.S.
