Fogarty welcomes new board members

May / June 2022 | Volume 21 Number 3

Fogarty welcomed five new board members at the latest advisory board meeting on June 7th. These members will provide guidance on Fogarty's funding awards and other global health activities.

Head shot of Dr. Otis Brawley 

Dr. Otis Brawley is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Oncology and Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Brawley is considered a global expert in cancer screening and prevention and leads a broad interdisciplinary research effort focused on cancer health disparities. Dr. Brawley was previously a professor of hematology and oncology at Emory School of Medicine and is also a member of the NCI's Board of Scientific Counselors.


Headshot of Dr. Wondwossen Gebreyes 

Dr. Wondwossen Gebreyes is a Hazel C. Youngberg Distinguished Professor in molecular epidemiology, executive director of the Global One Health Initiative at The Ohio State University and was recently elected to the National Academy of Medicine. Since 2010, Dr. Gebreyes has led a Fogarty-funded program establishing sustainable research and training capacity for foodborne pathogen research in East African academic institutions.

Headshot of Dr. Jennifer Kates 

Dr. Jennifer Kates is Senior Vice President and Director of Global Health & HIV Policy at the Kaiser Family Foundation. Dr. Kates, an expert in global health and HIV policy issues, oversees policy analysis and research focused on the U.S. government's role in global health and the global and domestic HIV epidemics. Prior to this, Dr. Kates worked as a Senior Associate in HIV Policy at the Lewin Group.

Headshot of Dr. Maureen Lichtveld 

Dr. Maureen Lichtveld is Dean of the Graduate School of Public Health, a Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health, and the Jonas Salk Chair in Population Health at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Lichtveld is a renowned environmental health researcher and formerly led Fogarty's GEOhealth program, where she developed a fully hybrid Master of Science public health degree program at the University of Suriname.

Headshot of Dr. Robert Murphy 

Dr. Robert Murphy is the Executive Director at the Institute for Global Health, Center for Global Communicable and Emerging Infectious Diseases at Northwestern University. He is also the John Philip Phair Professor of Infectious Diseases and a professor at Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering. Dr. Murphy's research focuses on HIV infection, viral hepatitis, and antiviral drug development.
