Inaugural US-Russia Scientific Forum held in Moscow

The Forum is designed to strengthen research
projects conducted jointly by the two countries
and facilitate broader research collaboration in
the biomedical and behavioral sciences.

The inaugural session of the U.S.-Russia Scientific Forum was held in Moscow Nov. 16-18, 2011 featuring joint meetings among approximately 200 participants on five themes in biomedical and behavioral research: cancer, healthy lifestyles, human development, infectious and rare diseases. Two additional themes, brain sciences and cardiovascular diseases, met in the United States as part of major conferences being held in these areas.

These groups, supported by visits to research institutions, laboratories and networking events, are designed to strengthen joint research and facilitate broader research collaboration in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, with the goal of improving public health.

An agreement establishing the Forum was signed in Moscow in April by Fogarty Director Dr. Roger I. Glass and Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Anatoly Grigoriev. The Forum, a public-private partnership of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH), was established in part from a $1.27 million gift from founding partner Eli Lilly and Company. The Forum meeting included additional support from Amgen, Amway, Celgene, The Coca-Cola Company, Genzyme, Merck, Novartis and Roche.

Part of the agreement is the formation of an inaugural Clinical Research Training Course, modeled after the established course at the NIH Clinical Center. The first course was held Nov. 14-18 at the Kulakov Federal Research Center for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology in Moscow.
