Queen of Spain visits NIH to discuss cancer research

Queen Letizia of Spain recently visited the NIH to learn about emerging strategies to treat and prevent disease, particularly cancer.
The Queen and Spain’s Secretary of State for research, development and innovation, Dr. Carmen Vela Olmo, met with NIH leaders and toured the Clinical Center. Talks focused on President Obama’s Precision Medicine Initiative, a more individualized research approach that takes into account a person’s genes, environment and lifestyle.
NIH Director Dr. Francis S. Collins greeted the guests and hosted the meeting, which included Fogarty Director Dr. Roger I. Glass, Fogarty Deputy Director Dr. Peter Kilmarx, National Cancer Institute (NCI) Acting Director Dr. Douglas R. Lowy and leaders of the American Association for Cancer Research.
Spain has a long history of collaboration with the NIH. For instance, about 70 Spanish scientists are currently Visiting Fellows on the NIH campus. In addition, more than 200 Spanish researchers are collaborating on about 160 NIH-supported grants, a number of which have study sites in Spain.
