Program Overview

The International Implementation, Clinical, Operational and Health Services Research Training Award for AIDS and Tuberculosis (IICOHRTA-AIDS/TB) program supported research training to strengthen the capacity of low- and middle-income country (LMIC) institutions to conduct clinical research and implementation science - including operations and health services research - focused on the prevention, care and treatment of HIV infection, TB and HIV/TB co-infection.

ICOHRTA AIDS/TB was implemented in two phases. In Phase I, 1-year planning grants were awarded to LMIC institutions to support the development of full research training applications in Phase II. Twenty planning grants were awarded to institutions in Botswana, Brazil, China, Haiti, India, Malawi, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Only recipients of Phase I planning grants and their U.S. collaborating partner institutions were eligible to apply for Phase II awards that supported research training for five years. Phase II awards supported training at institutions in Brazil, China, Haiti, Peru, Russia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
