Program Overview

The Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) funds foreign institutions in sub-Saharan African countries that receive PEPFAR support and their partners to develop or expand and enhance models of medical education. Support for the initial MEPI research sites began in 2010 and will continue through 2015.

MEPI aims to advance PEPFAR's goal of increasing the number of new health care workers by 140,000; strengthen in-country medical education systems; and build clinical and research capacity in Africa as part of a retention strategy for faculty of medical schools and clinical professors.

MEPI supports African institutions in a dozen countries, forming a network including more than 30 regional partners, country health and education ministries, and more than 20 U.S. and foreign collaborators.

The Future of MEPI: NIH support for Research Training for Career Development of Junior Faculty in MEPI Institutions

Through Limited Competition: Research Training for Career Development of Junior Faculty in Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Institutions (D43) (RFA-TW-14-003), announced in October 2014, NIH will support research training programs for junior faculty in MEPI-supported institutions to increase their capacity to participate in and carry out locally relevant research that contributes to improved human health, and to foster the next generation of faculty researchers in Africa. Only institutions and consortium partners in sub-Saharan Africa who participated in the original Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) program were eligible. View a list of eligible institutions. NIH intends to commit an estimated total of $35 million from fiscal years 2015 to 2019.
