Special Announcements

Updated implementation guidance of NIH policy on foreign subawards for active projects

As previously announced, NIH will not issue awards to domestic or foreign entities (new, renewal, or non-competing continuation) that include a subaward to a foreign entity. This Guide Notice updates the policy concerning existing projects that were active before May 1, 2025, and applications submitted on or before May 1, 2025.

Non-NIH funding opportunities:

  • The Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation (MDF) 2026 Research Grant and Fellowship programs are aimed at accelerating myotonic dystrophy (DM) research, to improve the lives of individuals affected by DM, and to pave the way toward finding effective treatments and ultimately a cure for this challenging condition. Applications from non-U.S. organizations are permitted.
    Application deadline: September 5, 2025
  • The ChadTough Defeat DIPG grants are open for applications. The grants are intended to incentivize novel approaches and to spark innovation to find a cure for the deadliest pediatric brain cancer, DIPG. Applicant need not be a U.S. citizen or be based at a U.S. institution.

  • The March of Dimes Discovery Research Grants are awarded to seasoned researchers seeking to make consequential translational discoveries that will drastically alter clinical care for pregnant women and babies, whether through evidence-based prevention, diagnosis, or intervention. These applications are open to global applicants. Applicants may not hold any other current March of Dimes grants when applying.

  • The TNE Exploratory Grants 2025 from Going Global Partnerships are open for applications. The grants support partnerships between the UK and 14 countries: Algeria, Bangladesh, Brazil, Egypt, Georgia, Ghana, Indonesia, Nepal, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, and Vietnam. Projects can be in any discipline or cross-discipline. In general, lead institutions must be higher education institutions in the UK and eligible countries with degree awarding powers. Additional eligibility criteria apply for some of the participating countries.

  • The Robert Katzman, MD, Clinical Research Training Scholarship in Alzheimer's and Dementia Research is open for applications. This award aims to recognize the importance of good clinical research and to encourage early-career investigators in clinical studies related to Alzheimer’s and related dementias. Applicants at accredited U.S. and international institutions are eligible.
    Application deadline: September 9, 2025
  • The 2026 Next Generation Research Grants fund and support innovative investigations by the best and brightest early-career researchers. These grants are typically limited to investigators who are interested in an academic career in neurological research and have completed residency or a PhD no more than 5 years prior to the beginning of the award (7 years for the three-year ALS and Myasthenia Gravis awards). Open to applicants worldwide.

  • The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships support researchers’ careers and foster excellence in research. The Postdoctoral Fellowships action targets researchers holding a PhD who wish to carry out their research activities abroad, acquire new skills, and develop their careers. PFs help researchers gain experience in other countries, disciplines, and non-academic sectors. This opportunity is open to applicants worldwide.

  • The Ovarian Cancer Research Program: Early-Career Investigator (ECI) Award supports the addition of new ECIs to the unique, interactive virtual Clinical Trial Academy that provides intensive mentoring, national networking, collaborations, and a peer group for junior faculty. Pre-application is required; application submission is by invitation only. Non-US applicants are allowed.

  • Global Oncology Young Investigator Award provides research funding to early-career investigators to encourage and promote quality research in global oncology and to develop the next generation of researchers to address global health needs. The research project is conducted under the guidance of a scientific mentor. Non-U.S. entities are eligible.

  • The Takeda Innovators in Science Award with Nature honors groundbreaking research by early-career scientists in gastrointestinal and inflammatory diseases, neuroscience and oncology. This global award recognizes researchers who are advancing the frontiers of scientific discovery, fostering innovation that has the potential to transform lives. The goal is to uplift emerging scientific leaders by providing them with the support and recognition needed to drive bold, transformative breakthroughs in their fields. Open to applicants worldwide.
    Application deadline: September 16, 2025
  • The International Travel Award Scheme for the Biological Sciences funds visits to international partners, to initiate collaborations, prepare joint funding proposals, visit overseas facilities, or attend European consortia-building events. You must be an existing BBSRC (Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council)-supported researcher in order to apply for funding. Open to applicants worldwide.
