Fogarty welcomes new director, Dr. Steven Schiff, MD, PhD

Steven Schiff, MD, PhD, became the ninth director of the Fogarty International Center, and Associate Director for International Research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), on June 4. A pediatric neurosurgeon, he was a professor at Yale University prior to joining Fogarty. Among his achievements in global health, he has worked toward the sustainable control of infant infections in lower-resource settings.

Fogarty seeks applications for International Health Program Officer

The Division of International Relations (DIR) at the Fogarty International Center is seeking an International Health Program Officer. The International Health Program Officer is responsible for all administrative, management, and policy development activities related to the implementation and coordination of NIH-supported biomedical research programs worldwide.

  • The Preclinical/Clinical Advancement of Cellular and Vaccine Therapies for Acral and Uveal Melanoma call for proposals funded by the Melanoma Research Alliance (MRA) through its Next Steps Program supports established researchers to accelerate the development of new approaches and technologies in cellular therapy and vaccine therapy for acral and/or uveal melanoma. The call has a central focus on implementation research, exploring multisectoral strategies to improve prevention, diagnosis, screening, and management of NCDs for people living in low- and middle-income countries, and/or in underserved populations in high-income countries.

  • The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Research Program - Clinical Outcomes and Biomarkers Award supports the development and/or validation of clinical outcomes and biomarkers to enrich clinical trials in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Projects can be relevant to a specific therapy, a class of therapeutics, or to a specific ALS subtype (such as a particular genetic mutation) and do not have to broadly apply to all patients. The program is open to independent researchers in the USA and worldwide.

  • The Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program - Clinical Trial Award from the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) supports clinical trials that will advance previously completed preclinical research to the clinic, progress treatments to the next stage of study or improve the standard of care for individuals living with cancer. The program is open to researchers in the USA and worldwide.

  • The Innovative Dermatology Education Award (IDEA) facilitates dermatologists' continuing education through support and development of innovative continuing medical education programs.   • The Myositis Association’s Meredith C. Thomas Memorial Fellowship supports a fellow pursuing a disease-specific, targeted project related to antisynthetase syndrome and/or interstitial lung disease. The fellowship prioritizes projects that advance understanding of cause, prevention, detection, treatment, or cure; work may also address health-related quality of life, symptom management, navigation of physical and mental health effects, and social impacts of illness.   • The Gary S. Wasserman, DO, FAACT Memorial Pediatric Abstract Award recognizes one abstract accepted to the annual North American Congress of Clinical Toxicology (NACCT) on a topic in pediatric toxicology. The abstract must be submitted by a trainee (student, resident, clinical fellow, pre- or post-doctoral fellow) whose career interests include pediatric pharmacology and/or toxicology.   • The Tirone E. David International Fellowship supports international cardiac surgeons (within their first 14 years out of training) to support clinical observational training at a North American host institution and the opportunity to have a visiting cardiac surgeon-mentor provide training, education, or research support at the award recipient’s home institution. Applicants must be practicing cardiac surgeons or those enrolled in a cardiac surgery training program. The program strongly encourages applicants from low- and middle-income countries.

  • The BraYn Starting Grant 2026 supports innovative focused research projects in neuroscience.
