Project Description

The global focus on women and key populations has curbed HIV-related adverse outcomes for these groups. But men in high disease-burden locations continue to remain at high risk of HIV acquisition and onward transmission. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) research and interventions have prioritized women and key populations, with notable reductions in HIV acquisition in PrEP users. This study addresses a key gap in HIV prevention for men by assessing:
  1. factors associated with PrEP uptake,
  2. factors associated with sustained PrEP use and attrition, and
  3. using behavioral economics to design and prototype an HIV prevention intervention for South African males 15-49 years old in high disease-burden communities.
