Project Description

Many of our U.S.-based Vanderbilt-Emory-Cornell-Duke (VECD) Fogarty Global Health Fellowship applications reflect the global health shift in recent years to an increased emphasis on qualitative and mixed methods approaches to answer outstanding questions and provide new insights into issues of prevention and treatment. However, our low- and middle-income country (LMIC) participants are much less likely to have knowledge of or training in these areas, nor do they have sufficient institutional mentorship in qualitative or mixed methods research, putting them at a disadvantage for attracting funding from certain NIH Institutes and Centers for their fellowship year and, in subsequent years, for their research projects. This supplemental project seeks to narrow this gap and build capacity (in line with our parent project goals) by providing intensive in-country workshops at two of our partner VECD sites and developing selected in-country individuals to serve as institutional leaders in qualitative and mixed methods research design and implementation.
