Project Description
Health research in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is often conducted in collaboration with investigators and institutions in high-income countries with the rationale that this helps circumvent many of the structural and economic limitations faced by LMIC-based researchers and promotes local research priorities at a global scale. However, there is growing attention to the fact that international research partnerships may often inadvertently perpetuate academic and scientific asymmetries between research partners which ultimately risks suboptimal scientific and partnership outcomes.
This project will use experienced HIV-focused research partnerships between Uganda and the United States to comprehensively describe best practices and barriers to equitable research collaboration and pilot a pragmatic equity planning tool to guide international research partnerships toward equity-focused outputs.
