Photo title: Girl playing in courtyard, Botswana

Photographer: Smiley N. Pool, Houston Chronicle

Description: This photograph was taken in 2008 in the courtyard of the Botswana-Baylor Children’s Clinical Center of Excellence in Gaborone, Botswana. The girl depicted had just finished a routine clinic visit and is clearly thriving on highly active antiretroviral treatment. The photo is a testament to the power of research to develop new treatments and systems of care that can enhance and extend life.
