I am announcing today that I will be stepping down from my positions as Director of the Fogarty International Center and Associate Director for International Research at NIH on January 14, 2023, to pursue the next chapter in my career.  It has been an honor and a privilege to have led this institution of truly outstanding, talented, and dedicated people, all committed to supporting global health research conducted by U.S. and international investigators, partnerships between health research institutions in the U.S. and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and training the next generation of scientists to address global health priorities.

During my nearly 17-year tenure as Fogarty's longest serving Director, our programs have facilitated the rapid expansion of global health activities at universities throughout the U.S. and in many LMICs.  We have helped build longstanding partnerships between U.S. and LMIC institutions and supported the career development of thousands of researchers and leaders in global health at home and abroad.  In so doing, our programs have engaged all 27 Institutes and Centers at NIH, and expanded global health from a field focused primarily on infectious diseases to one more inclusive of noncommunicable diseases, including cancer and mental health, ethics, data science, innovation, and more. Researchers trained by Fogarty have enhanced global security through their involvement and leadership in responding to the epidemics of HIV, Ebola, Zika and the current COVID.

As the Associate Director for International Research, I was privileged to work with Dr. Collins to launch the Consortium of Universities for Global Health, assist NIH in joining the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases, partner with PEPFAR to support the Medical Education Partnership Initiative in Africa and with the NIH Common Fund to support H3 Africa and Harnessing Data Science for Health Discovery and Innovation in Africa (DS-I Africa). We brought Bill Gates to Campus as our Barmes lecturer which led to an annual partnership activities between our organizations and participated in the leadership of the new NIH Climate Change and Health Initiative, and more.

While stepping down as director, I plan to remain as a Senior Scientist Emeritus to focus on bolstering diversity and equity in Fogarty programs, working with NIH leadership to expand engagement in global health, and reinforcing existing partnerships abroad.

I will be leaving Fogarty in the capable hands of Dr. Peter Kilmarx, the current Deputy Director, who over the past seven years has demonstrated his tremendous leadership ability. Peter is an expert in infectious disease research and HIV/AIDS prevention and who previously served as the CDC Country Director in Zimbabwe and rose to the rank of Rear Admiral and Assistant Surgeon General in the US Public Health Service.
