Fogarty International Center trains the next generation of scientists to address global health needs. This includes researchers in low- and middle- income countries. Fogarty believes that communities aided by local scientists can best identify and address health challenges, reducing reliance on external experts and building capacity. Fogarty has learned that a workforce comprised of global health personnel from a variety of backgrounds increases the likelihood that the health needs of all will be met.

In 2024, Fogarty offered an administrative supplement to help broaden the scientific workforce. The aim was to do a better job of finding and harnessing talent, experiences, and perspectives in the hopes of increasing the likelihood that local research remains relevant and sustainable over time. Fogarty received exceptional applications and achieved its goal of widening the geographic, scientific, institutional, and population scope of its awards.

In this series, we've highlighted three projects that received and benefitted from this supplementary funding. The projects represent three separate Fogarty training programs: the HIV Research Training program, the Global Infectious Diseases program, and the Global Environmental and Occupational Health program. They demonstrate that expanded training programs enhance the research enterprise, while helping to foster trust between researchers and the communities they study.
